ID Theft - Get Informed and Protect Yourself

ID Theft is a huge problem that affects millions of people every year. Here are a few things you should do to protect yourself from becoming a victim of this crime:

1) Protect your Social Security Number - Do not carry your social security card with you and do not give out your number for anything other than employment, credit or tax purposes.

2) Opt Out - Tell your bank(s), insurance companies, etc. that you do not want your financial information or credit status shared with anyone. Opt out privacy notices which are provided by companies give you a phone number to call or an address to write to if you want to opt out - call or write and opt out. Also, call 888-567-8688. This is a toll-free number to the three major credit bureaus that lets you opt out of prescreened credit and insurance offers.

3) Be Alert - Keep an eye on your bank account and other financial statements. At the first hint of a problem, contact that institution and get it resolved immediately. If it appears you have fallen victim to identity theft, go to the the Federal Trade Commission website for information on what steps to take.
